What is a Hydraulic power units, types and areas of its application
A hydraulic power unit is a technical device that supplies working fluid to executive mechanisms under the necessary pressure. These mechanisms usually include hydraulic motors and hydraulic cylinders. In turn, they move various equipment such as lifting and transport machines, presses, machines, production lines, and so on.
What types of hydraulic power units exist?
Depending on various qualities and parameters, there are many types of hydraulic power units.
For example, hydraulic power units are classified based on their transportability as:
- Mobile;
- Stationary;
- Self-propelled.
If we consider the equipment of the units, they can be divided into types based on the type of primary engine used:

A hydraulic power unit is used as a device that facilitates human labor. Its main function is to provide a stable and uninterrupted supply of working fluid to the hydraulic system.
How is a hydraulic power unit constructed?
Regardless of size or type, any hydraulic power unit contains the following elements:
- Accumulator tank for working fluid — a container made of plastic or metal with an integrated neck, in which a filter for filling the working fluid is located. Used for energy transfer to the hydraulic motor.
- Hydraulic pump — converts the kinetic energy of linear or rotary motion into mechanical energy of the fluid. It can be a vane, gear, plunger, axial or radial plunger.
- Primary engine — responsible for converting energy into linear or rotary motion.
- Pipeline — a system of channels that connects the hydraulic pump to various distributing, controlling, or regulating hydraulic equipment.
- Filters — drain and suction: devices for filtering the working fluid, which is returned from the hydraulic motor to the hydraulic tank.
What is the principle of operation of a hydraulic power unit?
In a way, the work of hydraulic power units resembles a closed circle. First, the hydraulic pump is started by the engine, which, with the help of a filter, pumps the fluid into the pipeline. Then it goes through the distribution system, which transports the oil to the executive unit (hydraulic cylinder or hydraulic motor).
After the fluid passes through all the elements and fulfills its purpose, the mechanism drains it back into the storage tank, from where it will start its movement again in the hydraulic system.
Where are hydraulic power units used?
Hydraulic power units are widely used in various fields, most often in production. It has special applications in machine manufacturing, food industry, energy, metallurgy, and agriculture. In light industry, hydraulic power units are necessary to ensure the uninterrupted operation of devices that require a consistently high pressure of working fluid. Such units include various types of saws, presses, jackhammers, wall cutters, grinding machines, as well as other hydraulic equipment and tools.
